Since mid-March, states across the country have rolled out some forms of “stay-at-home” orders due to COVID-19 pandemic, allowing only essential business to operate on modified bases, which turned out to be quite a blowback for hundreds of thousands of small organizations and clubs that depend on fundraisers and contributions for their work.

When we talk about small organizations and clubs, we talk about youth sports teams, schools clubs, organizations like Lions Club, Kiwanis, CEOS, Main Street organizations, but also churches, museums, community centers, Relay for Life teams, and similar. In rural and low population areas, these groups are the backbone of the communities, often supporting local businesses and each other, and being the creators of events that bring people to the area. Think fairs and festivals, 5K Races, door-to-door sales, craft shows, hot dog lunches, ham and bean dinners, and pancake breakfasts. All of those were suddenly cancelled, and the organizations found themselves in a bind.

However, with the shutdowns also came innovations, especially online. So, what are some of the ways fundraising can be done online? Companies like GoFundMe are always a choice, but when it comes to small communities, fundraising is also a part of the community spirit. And the question is – how can we bring people together while still staying apart? Here are some ideas:

1. Online Auctions

2. Walkathons

3. Online Bake Sales

4. Videos and slideshows

5. Drive-thru meals

6. Partnering with local businesses

7. Paint and craft parties

In the upcoming weeks, Covered Bridge Media will be hosting Facebook live Q&A sessions, as well as series of classes on how to set up an interactive online fundraiser. There are several key things to keep in mind. Even though these events are promoted and some even held online, planning in advance and advertising in a timely manner is crucial. Another important thing would be to keep the track of the participants – which can be done through email and text reminders, as well as by creation of online events for which they would have to sign up. This can also be helpful even as things go back to normal, and regular event schedules are able to resume. Additionally, duties of the people organizing it would have to be assigned remotely, and everyone would need to be ready on a day of the fundraiser.

So, if you haven’t already – make sure you follow us on Facebook or fill out the form on our website, so we can keep you apprised of the upcoming sessions. As always, you can email us at info@coveredbridgemedia.org for any questions!

Let us help you get your fundraising activities back on track!
